We all know that the Lord Jesus will return in the last days, so how should we be ready for Jesus’ return? Today, let us discuss and explore this issue together so that we will know how to be ready for Jesus’ return.
The first step to being ready for Jesus’ return is to have the heart of humbly seeking.
The Lord Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). The Lord’s words are very clear. To welcome the Lord’s return, we must have a heart of seeking humbly, for only those who are poor in spirit and seek humbly can enter the kingdom of God. Each time God comes He performs a new work, which is unfathomable to us humans; only by humbly seeking can we witness God’s appearance and gain His salvation.
Just as when the Lord Jesus appeared and worked, He preached the way of “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17), told man to confess and repent their sin, and taught them to have forgiveness, mercy, tolerance and patience, and to worship God in spirit and in truth. All of the Lord Jesus’ words and work went beyond the Old Testament. They were something difficult to accept for those who lived under the law. However, the Lord’s disciples like Peter and John—they were able to seek with an open heart, until finally they discovered that the Lord’s words were the truth, recognized Him as the Messiah, resolutely followed Him, and received His salvation. Conversely, those Jewish chief priests, scribes, and other religious elites were especially arrogant. Faced with the Lord Jesus’ work and words, they not only refused to seek and investigate, they judged, accused Him of speaking blasphemy, profaned the Lord Jesus by accusing Him of casting out demons by the prince of demons, and condemned His work as heresy. In the end, they colluded with the Roman government to crucify the Lord Jesus, and thereby suffered God’s damnation and punishment. This was the terrible consequence of their not seeking with open hearts when faced with God’s new work and words. It is evident that the Lord’s requirement for us to have a heart of humbly seeking is incredibly important.
In welcoming the Lord’s return in the last days, we should learn from the Pharisees’ failure and should not lightly pass judgment concerning things we don’t thoroughly understand. Especially with something as important as the Lord’s return, we really must seek with an open mind and study conscientiously. This way, not only will we win God’s protection from offending His disposition due to our blindly condemning Him, but also God will work in us because of our attitude of seeking humbly, allowing us to recognize God’s appearance and welcome the Lord Jesus’ second coming. This is the first step to be ready for Jesus’ return.
Then, what else should we do to be ready for Jesus’ return? The Lord Jesus said, “I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come” (John 16:12–13). “And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go you out to meet him” (Matthew 25:6). “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). And it is mentioned many times in Revelation chapters 2 and 3, “He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” We can see from these verses that the Lord will utter truths and speak to the churches when He returns, and through His utterances He will knock upon our doors. The wise virgins listen for God’s voice. Whenever they hear someone testify that the Lord has returned and expressed new words, they will open the doors to their hearts and seek and investigate with an open mind. This way they will be able to welcome the Lord’s return and attend the feast with Him. Just as Revelation 3:20 says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.”
Since only God can express the truth and express the Holy Spirit’s words for the churches, we will know the returned Lord by listening to God’s voice. This absolutely can’t be wrong. Therefore, if we are to welcome the Lord’s return, it is imperative that we take heed to listen to God’s voice. When we hear someone calling out “the bridegroom comes,” that is, we hear someone testifying that the Lord has returned, we should actively seek and listen to determine whether there is the expression of the truth. As long as we recognize God’s voice, we should unhesitatingly accept and follow Him. Only in this way will we be able to greet the Lord.
Just as when the Lord Jesus came to do His work, after Peter heard his brother Andrew say, “We have found the Messias” (John 1:41), he followed Andrew to go see the Lord Jesus, and ultimately, he followed the Lord Jesus and received His salvation. There’s also Nathanael. When he heard Philip saying, “We have found Him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write” (John 1:45), he had some notions, but he finally became certain that the Lord Jesus was the Messiah through His words. Those who have gained the Lord’s salvation all placed importance upon listening to God’s voice, and thus they determined that the Lord Jesus was the Messiah.
We can see from all this that in welcoming the Lord’s return in the last days, we should have the heart of seeking humbly and pay heed to listening to God’s voice. Only in this way can we welcome the Lord’s return.
